March is National Nutrition month, so let’s make it about Michigan and our Local community.
The definition of Nutrition is the selection of foods and preparation of foods, and their ingestion to be assimilated by the body. By practicing a healthy diet. many of the known health issues can be avoided. The diet of an organism is what it eats, which is largely determined by the perceived palatability of foods.
With Spring approaching soon, (hopefully) we are looking forward to fresh fruits and vegetables. Our local farmers markets will be opening soon and many of us will be out finding the prime spot to dig in the fresh soil and plant some of the best tasting foods of the summer. Did you know that Michigan is the second most agriculturally diverse state in the nation? We even have a state soil, called “Kalkaska” soil, which covers 750,000 acres in both the upper and lower peninsulas. I learn something new every day!
Listed below are several products that we can incorporated into our daily meals that are grown in Michigan.
Beans – Michigan is known for being the top producer of dry, edible beans. Frankenmuth is the headquarters for the Bean Commission.
Apples – Michigan’s largest and most valuable fruit crop is apples.
Cheese – There are many places in Michigan that make cheese. One very well know place is Pinconning, the Cheese Capital of Michigan.
Cherries – Grand Traverse, the Cherry Capital of the world
Fish – Michigan is the home of some of the best freshwater fish anywhere. The four Great Lakes, 11,000 inland lakes and hundreds of rivers and streams offer endless opportunities.
Here are a few Michigan Made Brands that we could also incorporate.
Garden Fresh – located in Ferndale, Michigan and makes the #1 fresh salsa in North America.
Yoplait – Made in Reed City, Michigan and is the largest Yoplait plant in the country.
Jiffy – located in Chelsea, Michigan, this product is shipped to all 50 states.
Pioneer Sugar – has been in Bay City, Michigan since 1839.
Kellogg’s – World Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan has been making corn flakes for more than 100 years.
Let’s teach the next generation how important nutrition is and that we can support our local community and buy local.
